Woodworking suction system

Some people would say that the table saw is the heart of the woodworking workshop, or even that the great woodworking tables are the heart. This is however wrong. The bread and butter, heart and soul of the woodworking workshop is the suction system. Without it the quality of life within the workshop would be minimal compared to what it is with the system.

The suction system is trifold. It is split up into the high vacuum system (small tube system), the high volume system (large tube system), and the air purifier system (air filter system). The two tube systems are controlled via the control system located on the wall of the wood workshop. The air purifier system is constantly on and does not require controlling (Figure of air purifier)

High vacuum system

Usage

The high vacuum system should be used whenever one of the handheld machines is used in the wood workshop. The system is activated automatically when a machine is connected to one of the outlets on the walls in the wood workshop.

An outlet where the high vacuum system gets automatically activated when a machine is connected and turned on.

Outlets (on the right) where the high vacuum system does not activate when machine is connected. Should not be used for any power tools.

If the system does not turn on automatically when a power tool is activated, please refer to the control section below.

Please use this system to vacuum clean the floor and tables before leaving the club. The accessories needed to vacuum and clean can be found on the wall where the control box is located.

Control

The control system for the high volume suction system can be located on the wall of the woodworking workshop.

The lower knob on the control box can be switched to three locations: ON, OFF, and AUTO.

  • ON: The system is activated manually. No power tools needs to be connected. This is useful e.g., when vacuuming the floor or hand sanding.
  • OFF: Turns off the system and automatic activation is disabled.
  • AUTO: The system is activated automatically when a power tool is turned on in any of the automatic outlets.

Maintenance

The high volume suction system is located in the project storage room. When the suction system has been used for a longer period of time, or before leaving the club, it is a must to empty the system into the bag below. This is done by opening the hatch just above the bag holder by releasing the clamp (at waist height). If the system does not suck enough dust, opening the hatch might help it suck more.

High volume system

Usage

The high volume system should be used whenever one of the larger machines is used in the wood workshop. Make sure that the system is open at the machine which you intend to use and closed at all other outlets.

The vacuum system is open allowing air to be sucked from the connected machine.

The vacuum system is closed not allowing air to be sucked from this location.

When the system is connected and open, the system should turn on automatically whenever the large machine is turned on. However, if the suction system does not turn on (can be heard usually when it turns on), refer to the control section on how to make it turn on automatically when the machines are activated.

Accessories for the system are and should be placed back on the wall where the control box is located.

Control

The control system for the high volume suction system can be found on the wall of the woodworking workshop.

The upper knob on the control box can be set to either “automatic” or “manual”. The automatic selection turns on the system whenever a large woodworking machine is turned on. The manual selection turns on the suction regardless of if a woodworking machine is on or not. This can be useful when checking if the system works or when using some of the accessories on the wall, e.g. using the funnel when sanding down large sections of wood.

Maintenance

The high volume suction machine is located in the project storage room. When the suction system has been used for a longer period of time, or before leaving the club, it is recommended to clean the system filter. This is done by grabbing the two handles at shoulder height, 180 degrees apart, and rotate around the large filter. A mild rattling sound should be heard while the internal workings clean the filter while rotating. If the system does not suck enough dust, cleaning the filter might help it suck more.

If sawdust has reached above half of the plastic bag underneath the filter, the bag needs emptying. Start by turning off the suction pump by turning the red knob on the filter unit to “O”. The bag should be emptied into a thinner plastic bag which can be found on top of the high vacuum filter system. The plastic bag on the filter unit can be removed by releasing the clamps in front of the machine, then a square metal piece comes loose which the bag is clamped to. After emptying, the thin plastic bag with the sawdust needs to be thrown out in the bins outside S-huset (in the parking lot). This should be placed in “Restaffald”. After replacing the thick plastic bag back on the filter unit, the red knob should be turned to “I” again.

Sometimes when the unit does not turn automatically on, the red knob might have been left on “O”.
