Carpentry chisels
The carpentry chisels are a fine woodworking tool to carve and shape wood into intricate details. They typically consist of one bevel edge and a flat edge, allowing for very precise flat cuts to be made.
Typical applications are for making joinery, or planing of very small objects.
Do not use these tools for mass removal of material.
ATM provides carpentry chisels in assorted sizes, alongside a mallet. Do not use the mallet to apply excessive force, it is there for precision control and to reduce strain.
How to use
- Before Use:
- Watch the instructional videos below on posture and carving methods.
- Remove as much material as possible with other tools, the chisels are only for the last detailing step.
- Ensure the chisel is sharp, if not see maintenance section.
- During Use:
- Do not use the chisel for scraping or any other work not related to carving.
- To prevent damage to the blade, only apply light force using your hand, body or mallet.
- The mallet is there to reduce fatigue, never apply more force than possible by hand.
- Only use the tool for solid wood.
- After Use:
- Remove any wood debris from the tools
- Apply a light coat of plane-wax from the plane drawer to prevent rust
- Store in the appropriate location
