Guide to Using ATM
Version June 2024
About ATM
- Wednesday evening is the club day and there will usually be members of the board present.
- Day-to-day club communication is via the Facebook group “ATM at DTU”. Please sign up. (We only admit members, no aliases).
- The board can be contacted at atm@atm.nu or on our Facebook wall. Board member details are posted on the door front door in case of emergency.
- ATM must not be used as a basis for commercial activity.
- ATM is a club under PF (Polyteknisk Forening). Apart from the large contribution from PF/DTU in the form of premises, electricity, etc., ATM is run and funded by the members. ATM is a community and not just a place where you can buy access to a workshop. ATM expects ALL members to assist in the operation of the club.
Using ATM
- Above all, use your common sense when working in ATM. If in doubt – ask, don’t guess.
- When (not if) you break something, please report the damage to the board via Facebook or e-mail.
- If you use the last of the consumables (soap, gasoline, sandpaper, oil, etc.) please contact the board so that more can be made available. If you need more than a little/few, please bring your own.
- There is access to the club 24/7/365 except for special occasions (annual party, joints, etc.).
- Food waste or food containers e.g., pizza boxes, must not be thrown in the trash cans in the club. It stinks and breed fruit flies. We empty the trash cans ourselves and it may take a few months.
- Large items can be taken in though the basement from the ramp at the front of building 101.
- Do not use ATM for things that give off fumes. E.g., Oil paint, epoxy, spray paint etc.
- Do not do woodworking that generates dust in the metal workshop.
- Grinding metal, for example with angle grinders, must only take place in the welding cabin. Pull the fume hood close to any grinding/welding. Metal activities that generate dust are not allowed in ATM (Apart from the angle grinder, belt grinder and bench stones in the welding cabin, used on clean metal).
- Guests are welcome in ATM with a member. Guests may NOT use ATM equipment or be left alone in ATM.
- ATM access is personal and may not be given to others. Do not leave the door to ATM open or block it from closing properly.
- Access to ATM is only for people who have proper access card that works. Do not let anyone in, everyone must use the access system.
- Please take good care of our worktables. Any residue e.g., oil, paint, glue etc., must be carefully removed. Do NOT e.g., drill or screw into the tables. Brown paper is available to protect tables from paint, glue, etc.
- Work on stainless steel is not allowed in the club unless specifically permitted by a board member. We are especially concerned about the health hazard of dust and fumes, and that stainless is too hard on our tools and machines unless used correctly. Please ask a board member before working on stainless steel.
- We expect all members to be able to find, read, understand, and follow notes and guides hanging in the club.
Cleaning
- Everyone must clean up after themselves. That means, tools must be returned to their proper place, machines and tables cleaned and floors vacuumed (sweep first if there is much on the floor). You must do this every time you have used the club.
- Beyond that, clean up after those before you who failed to clean properly and use a few minutes to clean up something in the club. No one cleans ATM other than the members, so if it is messy, clean it up.
- Make sure tables are clean. Otherwise, clean them. Clean the even if it was not you that made them dirty.
- Oil and grease residue on the tables and floors of the metal workshop must be cleaned with water and soap or in severe cases carefully with turpentine.
- Use the brown paper to reduce the need for cleaning on tables. If there are oil or grease on the table or floor, please clean them.
- The club has 2 portable vacuum cleaners. The blue one is primarily for wood workshop use. The orange, only for metal workshop use. As the blue vacuum is the only one to have a HEPA filter, it should be used when vacuuming dust. Avoid vacuuming long (>2cm) chips as they clog the hose.
- In the wood workshop, both dust collectors can be used to vacuum as well. Sweeping with a broom is not enough. You must vacuum as well.
- Oil and grease residue on the tables and floors of the metal workshop must be cleaned with water and soap. Use the brown paper to reduce the need for cleaning. If there are oil or grease on the table or floor, please clean them.
Tools
- All tools must be used correctly. Just because the right tool or machine is not available does not mean that you can abuse the tools that is available. For example: A wrench is not a hammer. The drill press is not a milling machine. Measuring tools are precision instruments and must only be used to measure.
- If you are in doubt about what proper use is, ask a board member or in ATM’s Facebook group.
- If there is anything in ATM that is broken, please report it to the Board and put the damaged tool in the office (if possible).
- If you are missing a tool in the club, feel free to suggest that we purchase it.
- No tools may be removed from ATM. Do not borrow tools from ATM.
Machinery
- Unlike hobby machines our machinery is professional equipment and REQUIRE that you read the manual.
- Almost all machines have notes with guides and rules attached to them or near them. Find them, read them, understand them, and follow them.
- All tools must be used correctly. If you are in doubt, ask a board member or on Facebook.
- You are not allowed to repair or adjust the machines in ATM. Faults must be reported to the Board.
- Some machines have attached safety equipment. Obviously, the safety equipment may not be removed. Even if it prevents you from doing what you want to do.
- Introduction to large machines (Lathe, milling machine, table saw, welding, etc.) is available upon request.
- Remember not to wear sweaters, hoodies or other loose-fitting clothing when using rotary machines (milling machine, lathe, and drill press, etc.). There is a risk that the machine will catch the clothes or long hair, resulting in severe injury. This also applies to bracelets, necklaces, watches and e.g. Roskilde Bands.
- The metal band saw is only for iron or softer materials, not Stainless Steel, Titanium, hardened Steel, etc.
- When welding, ensure that the fume extractor is pulled close. Be sure to close the gas bottle after use.
- The wood planer is locked away. After introduction to the planer, access is granted. The wood planer may only be used on clean new solid wood. Any type of recycled wood and sheets must not be planed. All safety equipment must be installed when using the planer.
- Working on pressure-impregnated wood or wood pallets is not allowed in the club.
- The wood milling cutter must be used only after an introduction by a board member.
- Always use ear protection and eye protection when using machines.
- The machines must be cleaned with a vacuum outside and inside after use. Do NOT use compressed air as it just spreads the dust/chips.
- The dust collector must always be used. Shake the cartridge filter on the dust collector after every use.
- All machines that generate dust must be connected to the dust collector system. If you do not know how, ask. This also applies to hand tools such as belt sanders, routers, circular saw, etc. Incl. your own tools.
- The wood workshop may only be used for woodworking. NOT for working with/on metal.
Project Room
- In the project room, you can store projects if you work on them often. I.e., at least every 2 weeks.
- Projects must be marked with a project note with full name and telephone number.
- Everything in the project room belongs to someone, project note or not.
- Projects may only be stored in the project room, not any other place in the club.
- Read the project room guide on the project note in the club.
- Storage on the floor is ONLY allowed with PRIOR permission of a board member. Everything stored on the floor MUST be on wheels to allow easy moving daily. Bring your own wheels.
- Absolutely no storage in front of the doors in the project room.
- Bikes may NOT be stored in the club. Put them outside in the bike racks.
- DO NOT place rod material upright. It will fall.
- The table in the project room can be used for short term (max 2 days) to allow e.g. paint or glue projects to dry. If clamps are used a note must say when the clamps can be removed (max 12 hours).
- Projects on the shelf over the dust collector are quarantined and thrown out at the next cleanup day by the board.
- 2 large trolleys and some rolling tables are available for temporary use. Do NOT store projects on the trolleys or rolling tables without permission from the board.
Wood and Metal Stock
- There are stocks of metal and wood for common use located in the workshop. Please ask a board member if you are in doubt if something is for common use.
- Some material is NOT for common use. Make sure you know the difference.
- ATM has a stock of sheet metal and rods for sale. Ask a board member for information.
- Although free, please respect the value of the materials available, and use them for something meaningful.
- Please observe the sorting of the various stock by length/size/type/material.
- The “price“ for taking something is to tidy up and sort the stock so it looks nice.
Membership Termination
ATM is a club run by the members and the board, based on trust that the members can use the club sensibly without supervision. To maintain a well-functioning club there are rules and guides that must be followed. Members unable to use the club sensibly may have their membership terminated by a board member followed by confirmation by the board. Some possible causes for membership termination include, but are not limited to:
Stealing
- Removing tools or equipment from the club without permission.
- Taking things that require payment without paying up front.
- Taking things from the project room not belonging to yourself.
- Taking materials, not for common use, without asking. Ask if in doubt.
- Taking something from the board area of the office without permission.
Gross negligence
- Causing significant damage to equipment by reckless behaviour.
- Using the club while intoxicated.
- Using machines that are out of order.
- Using the club and equipment in an unsafe manner. Not following common safety rules, incl. safety notices in the club. Removing or disabling safety equipment on machines.
- Using machines that require introduction, without an introduction.
- Altering/repairing/adjusting/disassembling machines or equipment without permission.
- Repeated failure to properly clean and tidy the club after use, even after a warning.
- Repeated failure to follow the guides hanging in the club and on/at machines.
- Failure to report damage to equipment to the board.
Access
- Giving access to the club to anyone, no matter the excuse (other than your own guest). See guest rules above.
- Letting someone else use your access to ATM.
- Leaving the club door open.
