Through the use of numerous jigs, it simplifies the learning curve of sharpening significantly, and can produce very good results very quickly. You're welcome to use this machine for sharpening your own tools or kitchen knives, but please refrain from sharpening club tools. Boardmembers regularly sharpen the club tools when they become dull or chipped, and due to maintaining a high quality only verified members are allowed to maintain the club tools. If you'd like to help maintain the club tools, send an email to atm@atm.nu. Do not sharpen the club tools! Do not use the Tormek as a grinder, only sharpen soft cutting tools. ===== How to use ===== - **Before Use:** * Watch the instructional videos below for the tool and jig you'll be using. * Read the manual for the Tormek. * Add water to the container for the grinding wheel. * Adjust the grit of the grindstone with the whetstones. Course grit for rough sharpening, fine grit for regular use. * Adjust the height of the stand to match the desired cutting edge angle. - **During Use:** * Apply pressure as indicated in the instructional videos and move according to the jig. * Use the water as an indicator where you're grinding. Optionally apply a marking on the bevel to see the difference. * When the desired bevel is achieved, often indicated by a reflective burr, move on to stropping. * Apply a polishing paste onto the leather stropping wheel, and remove the burr to get a sharp blade. * Try the edge on a piece of paper, hair or nail to test sharpness. It should cut with no effort or friction, else strop some more or go back to grinding. * Alternatively inspect the edge on our microscope. - **After Use:** * Return all jigs and manuals to their respective box and pack away * Empty the water container in the sink * Add the Tormek hood ===== Video guides ===== Tormek provides excellent guide videos on their [[https://www.youtube.com/@TormekSharpening|youtube channel]]. {{youtube>R2ifZQOJA7k?}} {{youtube>M9S-VfdbR0Q?}} ===== Maintenance ===== - **Regular Maintenance:** * Empty the water - **Troubleshooting:** * None yet - **Boardmember maintenance:** * True the whetstone
